Pregnancy Acupuncture

For you & your growing baby

Acupuncture is a wonderful, safe way to help maintain optimal health for both you and your growing baby during pregnancy. It is an ideal treatment as it offers pregnant women relief from potential problems, without resorting to medications.

Treatment can be used to help to alleviate several commonly experienced conditions including:

Nausea and sicknessHeartburnConstipationHaemorrhoids and varicose veinsUrinary tract infectionsFatigue and exhaustionInsomniaAnaemiaAnxiety and depressionMusculoskeletal conditions - back and neck pain, sciatica, symphysis pubis pain, rib pain, restless legs and carpal tunnel syndromeHeadaches and sinus problemsPregnancy-induced hypertensionOedema.

Labour preparation

Acupuncture treatment to prepare the pelvis and cervix for birth can be given three to four weeks prior to the due date. Research has shown that this treatment shows a reduction in women requiring medical intervention and caesarean section. (Betts D. and Lenox S, 2006)

Pain relief during labour

Acupuncture and acupressure offer drug-free alternatives for pain relief and provide relief from anxiety during labour. I am happy to teach clients and their birth partners how to use acupressure points during labour for pain relief and to experience a more efficient delivery.

Breech presentation

The simple procedure of applying Moxa (the herb Mugwort) to an acupuncture point at the end of the little toe has been shown to help turn breech babies in 70% of cases. The ideal time for this treatment is between 34 and 35 weeks. You will be given Moxa to continue the treatment at home.

Induction

Acupuncture can provide a gentle and effective labour inducement if your baby is overdue. Please note that this treatment will not be offered prior to your due date.

Post-natal care

Acupuncture can help treat post-natal fatigue, anxiety and depression, after-pains, persistent bleeding and insufficient lactation.

"The Golden Month"

The month after giving birth is called "the golden month" in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In traditional Chinese culture it is important for the first 30 to 40 days following delivery, that the mother is expected only to rest, eat nourishing food, stay warm, receive massage and bond with her baby. All household and other chores are delegated to other family members.

During this time, Qi and Blood are replenished and the woman's strength is restored so she is prepared for her new role. It is believed that the care received at this time by both mother and baby has a significant impact on their future health.
